SEMINARY NEWS!

Canon Ben Jones, Vice-Provost of St. Joseph’s is offering a course entitled Vocational Discernment for the Fall Semester, 2020, based on The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a ‘Kempis.  The Council of Bishops has decided that no man will be made a Deacon and no Deacon will be ordained a Priest until he has successfully passed Vocational Discernment for credit.

Both Archbishop Upham and St.  Joseph’s Provost, Bishop Ashman, would like to personally remind all clergy that “continuing education” is of supreme importance.  We too easily forget what we have learned.  We all need to learn what (perhaps) we didn’t learn.  We all need to sharpen our skills, especially our theological skills.”

OFFERINGS FOR FALL SEMESTER 2020 ARE:

1)  Continuation of the History of the Church and Development of Doctrine taught by the Rt. Rev. Peter F. Hansen, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of the Western States.

Bishop Hansen will be offering a two-semester course which will examine  elements of Christian History, the effect that the Church had on society, and the errors, inspirations, heroic tales, heresy and orthodoxy, that brought the promise of Christ: that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth, and how the Church developed its doctrine in that setting.  The first semester covered topics leading up to the brink of the Great Schism.  The second semester will cover the Great Schism, the Crusades, the medieval Papal States, the rise of the middle class, the Reformation, Anglicanism as opposed to both Roman and Protestant churches, and subsequent centuries and their challenges that continue until today.  Bishop Hansen’s course resumes TUESDAY, August 25th at 4:00 pm PDT and will run for fifteen weeks.  Please make time zone adjustments where necessary!

2)  Biblical Greek III & IV taught by The Rt. Rev. Donald M. Ashman, Provost of SJAATC and Rector of The Church of Our Saviour, Los Angeles, CA.

Biblical Greek III & IV will continue to focus on the rudiments of learning to read, write, and understand Koine Greek, the language in which the New Testament was originally written.  Bishop Ashman has arranged his busy schedule so as to offer this course for those students who would like to be able to read the original biblical language and understand the Scriptures more thoroughly for preaching.  Like Latin, Greek is a very valuable tool for those who are engaged with Holy Scripture.  Biblical Greek III & IV will resume FRIDAY, August 28th at 11:00 am PDT.  Please make time zone adjustments where necessary!

3) Vocational Discernment taught by Fr. Ben Jones, Registrar and Vice-Provost of SJAATC.  The Vocational Discernment Course is a combination of a prayerful, meditative foundation with a Christ-centered focus on the main Christian virtues of humility and redemptive self-denial.  The four books which comprise “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas a ‘Kempis will be studied as a dialogue between Christ and His Disciples and will both test and define the Discernment of a Vocation to the Ordained Ministry.  “There should be a careful scrutiny and organization of both our inward and outward life, since both are essential to our growth.”  (Kempis; Book #1).  Vocational Discernment will begin MONDAY, September 14th and will continue through December 7th, 2020 at 7:00 pm EDT.  Please make time zone adjustments where necessary!

PLEASE NOTE:  The Council of Bishops has decided that no man will be made a Deacon and no Deacon will be ordained a Priest until he has successfully passed Vocational Discernment.  Thank you!

St.  Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Theological College will again be hosting an intensive Summer Seminary Session from Monday, July 20th through Friday, July 31st, 2020.  Unfortunately, due to the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19), St. Joseph’s will host an on-line Summer Seminary Session this year.  The Summer Seminary Session attempts to immerse participants in a typical course of study that would be experienced in a Seminary educational environment.  Participants who register will be sent an invitation to join their daily classes via ZOOM, a platform which both the Council of Bishops and the Seminary have used with much success.  Students can participate with the instructors in real-time and the classes will be recorded for future use.  ZOOM’s new updating with better encryption and security will make this Summer Session possible, even in the midst of a pandemic.  ZOOM is quite easy to use.  There is nothing to download.  Just click your invitation to join the daily classes and ZOOM will download the necessary software to your machine.  Just be sure to have camera and microphone capabilities on your computer, I-pad, phone, etc.

This year’s session is designed specifically for Seminarians and younger (by date of their ordination) clergymen.  Daily classes will be taught Seminar-style.  We will meet for Morning Prayer at 9:00 am PDT, followed by instruction by the faculty until 10:30 am PDT.  At that time students will then work on their specific assignments/coursework to be presented that afternoon to the class, beginning at 3:00 pm PDT through 4:30 pm PDT, when we will hold Evening Prayer/Evensong.

SEMINARY NEWS

At a recent Council of Bishops meeting, the Council of Bishops appointed The Rev. Canon Ben E. Jones as Vice-Provost of St. Joseph’s Seminary.  He will also remain as the Seminary’s Registrar.  Archbishop Upham will assume the duties of President of St. Joseph’s and Bishop Donald Ashman will remain as the Seminary’s Provost.  Please see above for Canon Jones’ email address as all correspondence will go through him from now on.

Bishop Ashman, in a recent edition of The Shepherd’s Staff wrote, “I would like to personally remind all clergy that “continuing education” is of supreme importance.  We too easily forget what we have learned. We all need to learn what (perhaps) we didn’t learn.  We all need to sharpen our skills, especially our theological skills.”

With Bishop Ashman’s words in mind, these courses are offered for Spring, 2020:

1)  History of the Church and Development of Doctrine taught by the Rt. Rev. Peter F. Hansen, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of the Western States

The first semester will cover topics leading up to the brink of the Great Schism.  The second semester will cover the Great Schism, the Crusades, the medieval Papal States, the rise of the middle class, the Reformation, Anglicanism as opposed to both Roman and Protestant churches, and subsequent centuries and their challenges that continue until today. Bishop Hansen’s course begins TUESDAY, January 7th and will meet at 4 pm PST.

2) Ecclesiastical Latin VI taught by The Rt. Rev. Donald M. Ashman, Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of the Western States

Bishop Ashman will continue Ecclesiastical Latin for those who were enrolled previously. He has over thirty years of teaching experience as a high school Latin teacher. He adds that students should not be timid about taking this course.  The focus will be not only on Latin Grammar but also on the culture that produced our Church and its Liturgy.  Apply yourselves and you too can master Latin!  It will serve you well in life!  Latin VI will begin Monday, January 20th at 10 am PST.

3)  Biblical Greek II taught by The Rt. Rev. Donald M. Ashman, Rector of the Church of Our Saviour, Los Angeles, CA

Biblical Greek II will continue to focus on the rudiments of learning to read, write, and understand Koine Greek, the language in which the New Testament was originally written.  Bishop Ashman has arranged his busy schedule so as to offer this course for those students who would like to be able to read the original biblical language and understand the Scriptures more thoroughly for preaching.  Like Latin, Greek is a very valuable tool for those who are engaged with Holy Scripture. On-Line Courses Fall, 2019

St. Joseph of Arimathea College, the Seminary of the Anglican Province of Christ the King, will, once again, offer several on-line Seminary courses for all Postulants, interested Clergymen, and the Laity for the Fall Semester of 2019.  These courses are designed especially for Postulants of the APCK preparing for their canonical examinations but are also for clergy who wish to take advantage of continuing education and Laity seeking to gain a greater knowledge of their Faith.  The fee for each course is $250 (for credit, which includes written assignments, quizzes, and exams) and $50 to audit (no credit).  Scholarships are available through the Seminary on an as needed basis.

Textbooks, if required, can be purchased through Amazon.com or another leading bookseller.  Please email Bishop Upham at Bishopupham@gmail.com to obtain access information, where to mail your payment, and/or to apply for a scholarship.  We appreciate your interest and participation in this program of the Anglican Province of Christ the King.

As previously, all courses will be offered via ZOOMUS.com, a platform which is recordable and live, which provides immediate student/teacher interaction and seems to be a great platform for us.  It costs the students nothing.  They receive an email “invitation” via their email and then simply click the link to join the meeting.  You will receive more information when you sign up for a course.

The courses offered for the Fall 2019 semester are:

 1) Old Testament I (The Torah), taught by Fr. Michael Mautner, Rector of St. Peter’s, Oakland, California.

“You mean all that not eating pork and stuff – that’s in the Bible?!”

Indeed it is. The Pentateuch – the first five books of the Old Testament – is called in Hebrew HaTorah: The Law. Its statutory component of approximately 613 Divine Commandments is embedded in a narrative that starts with the Creation and ends with the death of the books’ traditional author, Moses, on the eve of the Israelite invasion of the land of Canaan. For Jews, it has always been the most important part of scripture; and, in Jesus’ time, the Torah was the one set of writings regarding whose sacred character all the factions in Roman-occupied Judea (Sadducees, Pharisees, et.al.) were agreed.

This course will center on the Torah’s commandments, with an eye toward the structure of its surrounding narrative. Modern theories of composition will be touched upon, but the goal of the course will be to arrive at an understanding of, and appreciation for, the religious and legal context in which, and often about which Jesus preached and Paul and Luke wrote. Our Lord’s healing miracles, his dialogues with gentiles, women, and lepers, and some of Paul’s Torah-based arguments and images will be considered, as well as the “problem of gentile believers” in the first 15 chapters of the Acts of the Apostles.
The course assumes knowledge only of the parts of the New Testament just referenced. The instructor will rely on the Authorized Version (King James), JPS (Jewish Publication Society), and the first volume of Professor Robert Alter’s “The Hebrew Bible.” Students may use any translation of the Pentateuch already in their possession.

(NB - This course (OT I) is required of Permanent Deacons, Transitional (Regular) Deacons, and Priests (a great refresher course)).

2)  Spiritual Formation I – THE DIACONATE, taught by Bishop Upham, Rector of St. George’s Anglican Pro-Cathedral, Raleigh, NC.

This course is dedicated to the formation of Deacons within the Province and to the many and varied aspects that comprise a vocation to the Diaconate, as well as the historical, theological, and pastoral characteristics of the Office of Deacon.  Far more than being a “baby priest” or a “half priest”, this course will focus on the fulness of the Office of Deacon; his specific responsibilities, functions, and duties in that Office, and his relationship with regard to Priests and Bishops.

The course will begin on Monday evening, September 9th at 7:00 pm Eastern via the ZOOMUSA.com platform and will continue through Monday evening, November 25th.  Final papers, similar to those required of Spiritual Formation II (Priesthood), will be due Monday, December 2nd for those who take the course for credit.

(NB - This course (Spiritual Formation I) is required of Diaconal Aspirants, Postulants, Permanent Deacons, and Transitional (Regular) Deacons.  Deacons who have not taken this course should consider it mandatory.)

 3)  Ecclesiastical Latin III & IV, taught by Bishop Ashman, Rector of Church of Our Saviour, Los Angeles, California.

Latin III & IV is a continuation for those who were enrolled in Latin I & II last semester (Spring 2019).  If you currently have a background in Ecclesiastical Latin, it may be possible to enroll in Latin III & IV with the permission of Bishop Ashman.  Please be sure to contact him before classes begin if you would like to do so.  All Latin and Greek courses have been designed to provide ample opportunity for individualized instruction as needed.  Latin will help you in all aspects of your life.

4)  Ecclesiastical Latin V, taught by Bishop Ashman, Rector of Church of Our Saviour, Los Angeles, California.

Latin V is a continuation of Latin I, II, III, and IV for those who wish to use their Latin to read many early works of various Latin religious scholars and Ecclesiastical works, such as the Vulgate and the Missal.

5)  NEW, NEW, NEW – Biblical Greek I, taught by Bishop Ashman, Rector of Church of Our Saviour, Los Angeles, California.

Biblical Greek I will focus on the rudiments of learning to read, write, and understand Koine Greek, the language in which the New Testament was originally written.  Bishop Ashman has arranged his busy schedule so as to offer this course for those students who would like to be able to read the original biblical language and understand the Scriptures more thoroughly for preaching.  Like Latin, Greek is a very valuable tool for those who are engaged with Holy Scripture.
