The Organ

The Organ in the Chapel was built for the University of California, Berkeley collection by Jurgen Ahrend, a master organ restorer and builder of international renown. The University collection envisioned by Dr. Larry Moe included an instrument to properly perform all major periods of organ repertoire. This instrument, a Bach organ, is an example of the Northern European style, a specification commonly found in the mid Eighteenth century. As such it was crafted with a Werkmeister III tuning scale rather than equal temperament.

The organ is entirely mechanical, having twelve stops over two manuals and pedal, a "shove" intermanual coupler, and a lower manual to pedal coupler. To facilitate its role as both a teaching and working instrument, it has interchangeable flat, radiating and concave pedal boards. In a serious break with authenticity, it has an electric blower and electric music rack light. The registration is as follows:

Manual I
Principal 8'
Flute 8'

Flute 2'
