Ascension's Campus Work Thrives at Colorado State University

February 2004

Anglican Church of the Ascension in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a new congregation that meets for Sunday worship on the campus of Colorado State University. Fr. Jeffrey Smith and his wife Lynn formed this congregation in the spring of 2002 as an extension of All Saints Anglican Church, a mission of the APCK in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It is now one of several in the Province designed to serve both town & gown. After a year and a half in operation, Ascension has more than twenty persons in attendance at the Eucharist on a typical Sunday. The congregation has ten student members, as well as one other who attends regularly and is preparing for baptism. The place of worship is the beautiful Danforth Chapel at the entrance to the Oval of Colorado State University, which can be accessed from Laurel St. on Howes Av. The traditional Eucharistic Liturgy (1928 Book of Common Prayer) begins at 10:30 am and is followed by refreshments in the churchyard. Visitor's Guides are provided to make the Liturgy easy to follow.

Church of the Ascension also has a parallel campus organization, the Canterbury Reading Club, which meets on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of months that school is in session in Room 217 of the Lory Student Center. An excerpt of a work by C.S. Lewis or some other notable Christian author is usually read and discussed at the meetings. Pizza and soda are provided.

The student that you see in the accompanying photograph is Ascension's newest member. Her name is Menita, and she is from a Hindu family in Madras, India. After studying with Fr. Smith for five months, she was baptized in the Danforth Chapel last October. When she completes her studies for a Master's degree in Computer Information Systems, she will return to Madras with her fiance Moses (who took this photograph) and join a congregation of the Church of South India. You see her in native
dress, taking her baptismal vows in the presence of the congregation.
