Bishop Consecrated and Installed for Diocese
of the Southern States
The Venerable Dr. William Conger Wiygul was unanimously elected
Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of the Southern States at a special
synod of that diocese on Friday, November 5, 2004, in Montevallo,
Alabama. The consecration and enthronement was at the Pro-Cathedral
of the Holy Comforter in Montevallo.
Archbishop Robert S. Morse was the chief consecrator. Co-consecrators
were the Rt. Rev. James Clark, retired first bishop of the Diocese
of the Southern States; the Rt. Rev. Frederick Morrison, Bishop
Ordinary of the Diocese of the Southwestern States; the Rt. Rev.
James Provence, Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese of the Western States;
and the Rt. Rev. Rocco Florenza, Bishop Ordinary of the Diocese
of the Eastern States. Bishop Provence was the homilist.
Bishop Wiygul was born in Natches, Mississippi. A graduate of the
University of Mississippi, he received his Ph.D. from the University
of Tennessee in Medical Clinical Microbiology. Later, he attended
St. Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Theological College in Berkeley,
California. Bishop Wiygul and his wife Beth are long time residents
of Montevallo. Prior to his election to the episcopate, Bishop Wiygul
served as rector of the Church of the Holy Comforter, administrator
of the Diocese of the Southern States, and secretary of the College
of Bishops.
